The King Alfonso X was married to lady Violante who had been declared sterile. Due to the importance of having a successor, he decided to reject her, and then sign an agreement with the Norwegian king Haakon to marry his daughter Cristine - Northern European women were well-known for their fertility.
However, on her arrival to Spain, lady Violante became pregnant and the Norwegian wedding could not celebrated.
In order not to break the agreement with King Haakon, he asked the princess to chose one of his brothers as a suitor. The infant Felipe was the fortunate one.
The wedding took place in Valladolid on 31st March 1258, but the princess died 4 years later in Seville.
She is buried in the cloister of the Covarrubias Collegiate Church. Her tomb was forgotten for more than seven hundred years, until it was discovered in 1958.
A bell has been placed by its side and according to Norwegian tradition under the protection of the princess if a young girl or boy rings it they will meet their true love.
