The Legend of the Seven Infants of Lara.

The name Salas de Los Infantes is to honour the gruesome fate of the seven sons of Gonzalo Gustios, murdered a thousand years ago.

The Lord of the City, Gonzalo Gustios, had seven sons. During games at the wedding of a relative, one of the seven infants accidentally killed a cousin of the bride.

The bride asked her husband, Ruy Velázquez, to revenge his death. To please his wife, he developed a plan: he asked Gonzalo Gustios to take a message to the famous Arab General Almanzor, who, at that time, was in Cordoba. In the message written in Arabic he asked the General to kill the messenger also informing him of the whereabouts of the princes. Almanzor took Gonzalo prisoner and sent his troops to ambush and murder the seven princes. Later the general took pity on Gonzalo and released him.

During captivity, Gonzalo Gustios fell in love with the Arab General's sister, who bore him a child. Some years later Mudarra, his son, went to Castile to be with his father. He knew about the fate of his seven step-brothers and he avenged them by killing Ruy Veláquez.

The heads of the seven Infants are buried in the Salas de los Infantes Church, but their bodies are buried in the La Rioja.
